Laser hair removal and the sun: how long before and after?

    Hair removal

Is laser hair removal possible in summer? How long should I avoid the sun before and after a session? These are the questions most frequently asked by patients wishing to reconcile laser treatment and summer life. The sun and laser hair removal don’t mix, but with the right precautions, it’s perfectly possible to continue with your sessions. CtrlZ explains everything.

Why avoid the sun with laser hair removal?

The laser targets melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. The problem? Melanin is also present in the skin, and its concentration increases with tanning.

Before the session: risk of burning

On tanned skin, the laser no longer distinguishes between hair and skin melanin. The energy is dispersed in the epidermis instead of targeting the hair follicle alone. Possible consequences:

    • Skin burns: from slight redness to blisters, depending on intensity
    • Hyperpigmentation: brown spots on treated areas
    • Hypopigmentation: white spots, sometimes permanent
    • Reduced effectiveness: the practitioner must lower laser power to avoid risks

After the session: risk of stains

The laser temporarily sensitizes the skin. Exposure to the sun in the following days may cause :

    • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: long-lasting brown spots
    • Disturbed healing: if the skin has reacted to treatment
    • Increased sensitivity: easier to sunburn

    ⚠️ Artificial tanning too

UV cabins and self-tanners are also concerned. Artificial UV stimulates melanin in the same way as the sun. Self-tanners deposit a pigment on the surface that can interfere with the laser. Avoid them for the same length of time as sun exposure.

How long should I stay out of the sun before laser hair removal?

The general rule is to avoid exposure to the sun for 2 to 4 weeks before a laser hair removal session. This allows the skin to regain its natural pigmentation.

    In practice :

    • Light exposure (daily commute, shaded terrace): 2 weeks minimum
    • Moderate exposure (days at the beach, outdoor sports): 3 to 4 weeks
    • Deep tan (sun vacations, UV rays): wait for complete tanning, sometimes 6 weeks.

At your appointment, the practitioner will assess your tanning level. If the skin is too pigmented, the session will be postponed for your safety. At CtrlZ, tanning tests are systematically carried out in case of doubt.

How long can I stay out of the sun after laser hair removal?

After a session, avoid exposure to the sun for at least 2 weeks, ideally 4 weeks on treated areas.

    What to avoid:

    • Sunbathing and voluntary tanning
    • Beach, outdoor pool, sunny activities
    • UV cabins
    • Outdoor sports during sunny hours

    What’s possible:

    • Daily outings with SPF 50 sun protection on treated areas
    • Covering clothing on exposed areas
    • Early morning or late afternoon outdoor activities

💡 Sunscreen is not enough for a tan

Even with SPF 50, prolonged exposure to the sun stimulates melanin production. Sunscreen protects against harmful UV rays, but does not totally prevent tanning. If you must expose yourself to the sun, cover treated areas with clothing.

Is laser hair removal possible in summer?

Yes, it’s possible, as long as you’re rigorous about sun protection. Summer is not an absolute contraindication to laser hair removal.

Areas that are easy to protect

Some areas are naturally less exposed and can be treated all year round without difficulty:

    • Swimsuit: covered by bathing suit
    • Armpits: rarely directly exposed
    • Intergluteal fold: unexposed area

    The trickiest areas in summer

    These areas require special vigilance:

    • Legs: very exposed in shorts or skirts
    • Arms and forearms: often uncovered
    • Face: daily exposure difficult to avoid
    • Back and torso: exposed at the beach

For these areas, there are two options: space out sessions during the summer or be very strict about protection (covering clothing, SPF 50, avoidance of direct sunlight).

The Nd-YAG laser advantage in summer

At CtrlZ, our dual-wavelength lasers make it possible to switch to Nd-YAG (1064 nm) for lightly tanned skin. This laser penetrates deeper and interacts less with surface melanin, offering a safer alternative when Alexandrite is contraindicated.

The real risks of sun exposure

    Before the session

If you arrive at your appointment with a tan :

    • Session postponed: the practitioner refuses to treat for your safety
    • Reduced parameters: if the tan is light, power will be reduced, reducing efficiency.
    • Risk of burns: if tanning is undetected or underestimated

    After the session

If you expose yourself too soon after treatment:

    • Brown spots: hyperpigmentation that can last several months
    • White spots: sometimes permanent hypopigmentation on dark skin
    • Aggravated sunburn: sensitized skin burns more easily

    Our summer tips

    • Plan your sessions: start your protocol in autumn/winter for peace of mind in summer
    • Protect yourself every day: SPF 50 on treated areas, even on cloudy days
    • Focus on covered areas: bikini line and underarms are ideal for summer.
    • Be honest: report any sun exposure to your practitioner
    • Space out if necessary: it’s better to postpone a session than risk complications.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I go to the beach between sessions?

Yes, as long as you wait 2 weeks after your last session and 2 to 4 weeks before your next one. Protect treated areas with SPF 50 and clothing if possible.

Is sunscreen enough to protect me?

For short daily exposures, a well-applied SPF 50 (reapplied every 2 hours) is all you need. For a day at the beach or prolonged exposure, covering clothing is essential.

I have a light tan, can I still do my session?

Your practitioner will decide. A very light tan can sometimes be treated with the Nd-YAG laser at the appropriate parameters. Visible tanning generally requires a postponement of the session.

Why do some centers accept tanned skin?

Centers equipped only with diode lasers or pulsed light sometimes take more risks. At CtrlZ, our priority is your safety: we’d rather postpone a session than risk complications.

    Plan your laser hair removal

Ideally, you should start yourlaser hair removal protocol in autumn, so you can enjoy smooth skin all summer long. Our teams will advise you on the best timing for your exposure habits. An information consultation is offered.
