Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant and wondering whether you can continue with laser hair removal? The answer is clear: laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. But why this contraindication? What happens if you have had a session without knowing you were pregnant? And should you expect regrowth after giving birth? CtrlZ answers all your questions.
Is laser hair removal possible during pregnancy?
No. Laser hair removal is contraindicated for pregnant women. This recommendation is systematically applied by all medical laser hair removal centers, including CtrlZ.
Yet laser hair removal is not in itself dangerous for the fetus. The wavelengths used (Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd-YAG 1064 nm) penetrate only a few millimeters into the skin and do not reach internal organs. So why this contraindication?
The reasons for this precaution
- Precautionary principle: no studies have been carried out on pregnant women (for obvious ethical reasons). In the absence of data, caution is called for.
- More sensitive skin: pregnancy hormones modify the skin, making it more reactive. The risk of burning or hyperpigmentation is increased.
- Drug risk: in the event of an adverse reaction, certain treatments may be necessary but contraindicated during pregnancy.
- Hormonal changes: pregnancy stimulates hair growth. Treating hormone-induced hair regrowth is unlikely to be effective.
- Unnecessary discomfort: the sensation of “rubber band snapping” can be unpleasant and stressful for a pregnant woman.
⚠️ What if I did a session and didn’t know I was pregnant?
No need to panic. Laser treatment has no known harmful effect on the foetus. If you unknowingly had a session in early pregnancy, there’s no need to worry. Simply inform your practitioner and suspend sessions until after delivery and breast-feeding.
Laser hair removal and breastfeeding: same recommendation
Breastfeeding is also a contraindication to laser hair removal. The reasons are similar:
- Breastfeeding hormones (prolactin) continue to influence hair growth
- Skin remains sensitive and reactive
- Some treatments may pass into breast milk in the event of an adverse reaction
It is recommended to wait until the end of breastfeeding before resuming laser hair removal sessions.
Hair regrowth after pregnancy: should you be concerned?
Had you completed your laser hair removal protocol before you became pregnant, and now you notice a slight re-growth after giving birth? This is perfectly normal.
Why does hair come back?
Pregnancy causes a major hormonal upheaval. Estrogen and progesterone stimulate hair follicles, including those that were dormant. As a result, hair can reappear on areas you thought were permanently hair-free.
This regrowth is generally :
- Slight: a few fine hairs, not complete regrowth
- Localized: often on the face, stomach (brown line) or bikini line
- Temporary: some disappears naturally once hormonal balance is restored
What to do in the event of regrowth?
After childbirth and the end of breastfeeding, you can resume laser hair removal sessions. One to three maintenance sessions are generally enough to treat hair reactivated by pregnancy.
At CtrlZ, we recommend waiting at least 3 months after stopping breastfeeding for hormones to stabilize and treatment to be fully effective.
💡 Good to know
Post-pregnancy regrowth does not call into question the effectiveness of your initial treatment. The follicles destroyed by the laser remain destroyed. These are dormant follicles, reactivated by hormones, which produce new hair.
Laser hair removal before pregnancy: a good idea?
Are you considering pregnancy and wondering whether you should start laser hair removal beforehand? Yes, it’s an excellent strategy.
By carrying out your laser hair removal protocol before pregnancy:
- You benefit from optimal results throughout the 9 months of pregnancy
- Avoid the chore of shaving with a round belly
- You limit the ingrown hairs and irritation associated with conventional hair removal.
- You will only have to do a few maintenance sessions after giving birth.
Ideally, the protocol (6 to 8 sessions) should be completed at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal dangerous for babies?
No danger has been demonstrated. The laser penetrates only a few millimeters into the skin and does not affect the fetus. However, as a precautionary measure and in the absence of studies, laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy.
Can I use Intense Pulsed Light while pregnant?
No. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is also contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, for the same reasons as laser treatment.
What are the alternatives during pregnancy?
Razors remain the safest method during pregnancy. Waxing is possible, but may be more painful due to increased skin sensitivity. Avoid depilatory creams, whose chemical components may irritate your sensitive skin.
When to resume laser hair removal after childbirth?
Wait until the end of breast-feeding + 3 months for your hormones to stabilize. If you’re not breast-feeding, you can generally start again 3 to 6 months after giving birth, once your practitioner has validated it.
Does post-pregnancy regrowth affect all women?
No. Some women experience no regrowth at all, while others experience only slight regrowth. This depends on your hormonal status and the area treated. Hormone-dependent areas (face, stomach) are more likely to see hair reappear.
